Discord admin application questions: 25 to copy, and what to check before you give anyone the keys

An admin application is not a longer moderator application. A moderator enforces rules; an admin can change roles, channels, bots and the rules themselves, and with the Administrator permission can do all of it. So the questions should test trust, judgement under pressure and willingness to say no, not only whether the person is active. Below: a 5-question form, 5 scenario questions, 10 interview questions, a scoring table, red flags and a safer way to hand out admin. Form questions are 45 characters or shorter, the limit Discord puts on a pop-up form label.

Round 1: the application form (5 questions)

These cover history, availability and why the person wants more than a moderator role:

1. Discord username, age and time zone?
2. Servers you have admined or owned, and when?
3. Hours a week you can be online for us?
4. Bots and tools you have configured before?
5. Why admin and not moderator?

Round 1b: scenario form (5 questions)

Admins get tested by situations nobody wrote a rule for. Use this second form for the people who passed the first:

1. A mod leaks staff chat. What do you do?
2. A raid hits at 3am. Your first steps?
3. Owner wants a rule you think is unfair.
4. A bot you added spams. Your steps?
5. A mod wants a ban reversed. You decide?

Want different wording? Open the application form builder, paste your changes and copy the Formwell commands. The general version is in the staff application template, and the lower-stakes one in the moderator application questions.

Round 2: interview questions (10, any length)

Ask these by voice or in a private thread, with the owner or head admin present. You are listening for caution about permissions and for how the person talks about the people they would work with:

1. Which permissions on this server would you never give to a bot, and why?
2. How do you decide who gets promoted from moderator to admin?
3. Describe a time you had to remove a friend from a team. What did you do?
4. How would you set up channel permissions for a new staff-only category?
5. What would you log, and where, so every admin action can be checked later?
6. How do you handle two admins who disagree in front of members?
7. What is your plan if the owner is offline and the server is under attack?
8. How do you hand over your admin work if you leave?
9. Which Discord settings do you check first on a server you just joined as admin?
10. What would you refuse to do, even if the owner asked?

How to score the answers

Score each applicant 0 to 2 on every row and compare totals. Do it before the interview, so a likeable voice does not move the numbers:

What you check2 points0 points
Track recordNames servers, dates and what they ran; you can check one of themVague history, or "I owned many servers"
Permission senseGives the least permission that does the job, and explains whyAsks for Administrator for convenience
ConfidentialityKeeps staff chat private and says what they would never shareTreats staff talk as gossip material
DisagreementRaises it privately, accepts a decision, documents itArgues in public channels or goes around the owner
Crisis planHas a first-five-minutes order: lock, log, tell the team"I would ban everyone"
HandoverWrites down what they changed so another admin can followKeeps settings and bot logins to themselves

Red flags

A safer way to hand out admin

Discord's Administrator permission bypasses every channel permission and cannot be limited. Where you can, build the admin role from the specific permissions instead: Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Messages, Kick/Ban Members, Moderate Members, View Audit Log, and keep Manage Server and Manage Webhooks for the one or two people who need them. Start new admins as a trial role without Manage Server, and promote after a few weeks. Turn on two-factor authentication for moderation actions (Server Settings > Safety Setup > Require 2FA for moderator actions), so a stolen staff account cannot ban people. Only the server owner can transfer ownership, so keep that account safe.

Run the application inside Discord

  1. Add Formwell with the button above.
  2. /form create name:admin review_channel:#admin-apps accept_role:@Trial Admin creates the form; add the questions above with /form add-question, or start from the staff set with template: and edit it with /form edit-question.
  3. /form publish form:admin channel:#apply posts a panel with an Apply button. Many servers publish it in a staff-only channel and invite only existing moderators.
  4. Answers appear in #admin-apps with Accept and Deny. Accept gives @Trial Admin and DMs the applicant; Deny asks you for a reason and sends it.

Put Formwell's role above the role it gives (Server Settings > Roles), or Discord will not let it assign it. Prefer a form inside Discord to a Google Form so applicants cannot mistype their username: see Google Form vs a form inside Discord.
