Discord server questionnaire before join: 5 pre-join questions to copy
A questionnaire before joining keeps out raiders and bots, and it tells you who is arriving. This page gives five pre-join questions you can copy, what each one filters for, how this differs from Discord's built-in membership screening, and the steps to run it with Formwell. Questions are 45 characters or shorter, the limit Discord puts on a pop-up form label.
The pre-join questions (5)
Short enough that a real person answers in under a minute:
1. How did you find this server?
2. Your age range (13-17, 18-24, 25+)?
3. What do you want to do here?
4. Have you been in a similar server before?
5. Which of our rules matters most to you?
Want a different set? Paste your own into the application form builder and copy the Formwell commands.
What each question filters for
| Question | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| How did you find this server? | Which invite link works, and whether a raid link is circulating |
| Age range | Lets you route under-18 members away from channels you restrict |
| What do you want to do here? | A copy-pasted or empty answer is the quickest bot tell |
| Similar server before? | Gives context for returning members and ban evaders |
| Which rule matters most? | Shows they read the rules; link your rules in the panel text |
Members click Apply and answer in a Discord pop-up. Answers land in your review channel with Accept and Deny; Accept gives the role and DMs the member. Free: 3 forms, 5 questions each, unlimited submissions. Set up with 3 slash commands.
Add Formwell to your serverNeed more? Pro: up to 50 forms, multi-page forms (25 questions), cooldowns, CSV export, $5/month per server. Run /premium in your server to upgrade.
Formwell is new: it runs in our own test server and we are looking for its first real servers. Bugs: formwell@tuper.app.
Built-in screening or a form?
Discord has its own membership screening, which shows your rules and lets you add a few questions on Community servers. It is the right first step if it covers what you need. A form bot adds things it does not do the same way, so choose by need (check Discord's current settings, they change):
| You need | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Members just agree to the rules | Discord's built-in screening |
| Staff reading the answers in one channel and clicking Accept or Deny | A form bot such as Formwell |
| A role given on Accept and a reason sent to the member on Deny | A form bot such as Formwell |
| Running it on a server that is not set up as a Community server | A form bot such as Formwell |
For other form bots see the comparison of Discord forms bots; for longer staff forms see the staff application template.
Run it in Discord
- Add Formwell with the button above.
/form create name:join review_channel:#join-requests accept_role:@Membercreates the form. Add the questions above with/form add-question.- Make the server show new people only a #start-here channel.
/form publish form:join channel:#start-hereposts a panel with a button that opens the pop-up. - Answers appear in #join-requests with Accept and Deny. Accept gives the Member role; Deny asks you for a reason and sends it to the member.
Free covers 3 forms with 5 questions each and unlimited submissions, which fits one join form.
