Discord moderator application questions: 25 to copy, with what a good answer looks like
A moderator application has one job: find out whether the person will be around, keep their head when members are rude, and follow the rules even when a friend breaks them. Below are copy-and-paste question sets for the Discord form, ten longer interview questions for the second round, a scoring table, red flags, and the permissions to give a new mod. The form questions are 45 characters or shorter, the limit Discord puts on a pop-up form label.
Round 1: the application form (5 questions)
Five is what one Discord pop-up holds. These cover availability, experience and history:
1. Your Discord username and age?
2. Time zone and hours a week you can be on?
3. Servers you have moderated, and your role?
4. Have you been banned or muted anywhere? Why?
5. Which of our rules is the hardest to enforce?
Round 1b: scenario form (5 questions)
Use this second form for people who passed the first, or swap it in if you would rather test judgement than history. Scenario questions are hard to copy from another server's application:
1. A friend breaks a rule. Walk me through it.
2. Two members fight and both report. Steps?
3. A mod you respect abuses the mute. What now?
4. Someone posts a leak of private info. Steps?
5. A new account floods chat. First 3 actions?
Want to edit either set? Open the application form builder, paste your changes, and copy the Formwell commands. Both are also in the staff application template in similar wording.
Round 2: interview questions (10, any length)
Ask these by voice or in a private thread with the 3 to 5 applicants who passed round 1. They are open questions on purpose; you are listening for how the person reasons, not for a right answer:
1. Tell me about a conflict you calmed down online. What did you say first?
2. When is a warning enough, and when do you go straight to a ban?
3. How do you act when a member insults you personally in the chat?
4. What would you do if you disagreed with a decision from the head admin?
5. How would you handle a member who is underage?
6. What do you do when no other mod is online and a raid starts?
7. Which bots have you used for logging and automod? What did you set up?
8. How do you keep a record of your actions so the next mod can see them?
9. What would you change about this server in your first month?
10. Is there a type of member you find hard to stay neutral with? Why?
Members click Apply and answer in a Discord pop-up. Answers land in your review channel with Accept and Deny; Accept gives the role and DMs the member. Free: 3 forms, 5 questions each, unlimited submissions. Set up with 3 slash commands.

How to score the answers
Score each applicant 0 to 2 on every row, add it up, and compare the totals instead of going on gut feeling:
| What you check | 2 points | 0 points |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Overlaps hours when your team is thin, and says how many hours | "Whenever" or hours that clash with the whole team |
| Calm under insults | Does not respond in kind, warns once, documents it, escalates | Argues back or would "teach them a lesson" |
| Fairness | Applies the rule to a friend the same way | Would let a friend off, or punish someone they dislike harder |
| Escalation | Knows when to call the head admin or another mod | Decides everything alone, or never acts without asking |
| Rule knowledge | Names a specific rule from your server | Generic answers that could fit any server |
| Effort | Answers in full sentences with an example | One-word answers, copied text |
Red flags
- Applying mainly for the role colour or to get permissions ("I want to ban people").
- A bans history they will not explain, or a story where every previous server was unfair to them.
- Only online in one narrow window your team already covers.
- Answers identical to another applicant's (they share a draft; ask a follow-up in the interview).
- Asks for Administrator before they have started.
What to give a new moderator
Do not hand out Administrator. A moderator role needs these Discord permissions and not much else: Kick Members, Ban Members, Moderate Members (timeouts), Manage Messages, Manage Nicknames and View Audit Log. Give the role as a trial first (a @Trial Mod role without Ban Members), and promote after a few weeks. In Server Settings > Roles, drag the mod role above the members it moderates, or Discord will not let it act on them.
Run the application inside Discord
- Add Formwell with the button above.
/form create name:mod review_channel:#mod-apps accept_role:@Trial Mod template:Moderator scenario questionscreates the form with the scenario set. For the history set, pick Staff / moderator application from the same list. Or add your own with/form add-question./form publish form:mod channel:#applyposts a panel with an Apply button.- Answers appear in #mod-apps with Accept and Deny. Accept gives @Trial Mod and DMs the applicant; Deny asks you for a reason and sends it.
Putting the form in Discord also fixes the usual mistake with Google Forms, where applicants mistype their username. See Google Form vs a form inside Discord, or the free server rules template to publish the rules your new mods will enforce.
